If you’re reading this, chances are we have something in common, a child or loved one on the spectrum. In my case, my son was diagnosed with Autism at around two years old. I’m not a doctor. I’m not an expert either. I’m a mother with no prior autism experience, taking it as it comes. Everyday my family and I are faced with new and unexpected challenges and together we figure it out. Besides my family, one of the biggest sources of help is the autism community. Other moms, dads, sisters, brothers, friends and those with autism all offer so much support, even if its just the assurance that I’m not alone, or the solace that whatever we are going through today isn’t unheard of, is par for the course and isn’t as scary or hopeless as it may seem. Pictures and stories of other smiling kiddos on the spectrum, being silly and carefree, offer a ray of sunshine and remind me of how wonderful these kids are. Tips and tricks of the trade from others who have already experienced what may be new to us is unbelievably helpful. Even if the problem isn’t new to us, so often someone else’s creative solution might be just the thing we’ve needed. That’s why I’m here doing what I’m doing; reaching out to like minded people in similar situations. I want to offer comradery, answers and reassurance, like so many have done for me. We are not alone. We are strongest as a community, supporting each other in our common goals to do what’s best for our families, loved ones and ourselves. Together we thrive.
